Molecular Line Surveys
Robert Minchin Gregorian upgrade - gave frequency flexibility.
2
Two kinds of survey: Spectral Survey
Concentrate on small number of sources. Covers many frequencies. Can discover many new lines. Multi-object Survey Concentrate on single band. Many sources observed. Can discover targetted lines in new sources.
3
Arp 220: Spectral Survey Survey covers 1 - 10 GHz.
Spectrum split into 14 sections of 670 MHz each for observing. Each section observed for 1 hour on-source. Survey 98% complete. Initial results: Salter et al
4
Methanimine in Arp 220.
5
HCN in Arp 220. First detection of cm transitions of HCN.
6
Prebiotic Molecules: Multi-object Survey
Targets 21 “Arp 220-like” galaxies. Covers MHz, including the methanimine and HCN transitions. Methanimine found in a further 4 galaxies so far and HCN in 3.
7
Molecular lines in IC 860: HCN, excited OH, H_2 CO, and Methanimine.
8
Prebiotic Molecules: Multi-object Survey
Targets 21 “Arp 220-like” galaxies. Covers MHz, including the methanimine and HCN transitions. Methanimine found in a further 4 galaxies so far and HCN in 3. Observations and analysis are ongoing. 19 galaxies outside of the Arecibo sky being observed with the GBT
9
Future Capabilities I Expand instantaneous spectral coverage to 1 GHz.
Uses current IF and the new Mock Spectrometers. Proposals already received (Arce et al.) to use this mode for spectral surveys of interesting regions in our Galaxy.
10
Future Capabilities II
Expand instantaneous spectral coverage to 2 GHz. Use Mock Spectrometers, but requires IF/LO systems to be modified. Timescale of years. Cost of $100k.
