4
Electromagnetic Spectrum
– a group of waves that includes: Radio Waves Microwaves Infrared Light Visible Light Ultra Violet Light X-Rays Gamma Rays
5
(Visible) Light – is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be seen by the human eye
6
Transmission – the movement of light waves from one place to another
A medium is not needed for light waves to be transmitted light traveling through space from the Sun to Earth Remember…“trans” means across Example:
7
Prism - tool used to split white light into different wavelengths (colors) ed range ellow reen lue ndigo iolet R O Y G B I V
8
Refraction – a change in direction (bending) of a light wave due to a change in its’ speed
9
Reflection – a change in direction of a light wave due to an obstruction, this gives objects “color”
10
Color – what we visually see (the absorbed wavelengths of light)
11
Absorption – when an object takes in wavelengths of light, what is reflected is what we see as color
12
Scattering – the spreading of light in all directions due to reflection and absorption
13
Transparent – when an object allows most all light through it
14
Translucent – when an object allows some light through it and spreads out the rest
15
Opaque – when an object does not allow any light to pass through it because they reflect and/or absorb the light
