Replace with Fossil Fuels (coal)
Creates new long term environmental problems
Acid Rain, Global Warming, etc.

Over 400,000 by 1850
Rapid growth causes many problems:
No urban planning
Factories and worker housing are thrown together
Air pollution
No sewer or public water systems
Leads to widespread disease outbreaks

Bacterial infection spread by drinking water w/ sewage in it
