1 Leadership then & now Various Scriptures
11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Ephesians 4

2 1 Peter: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you
1 Peter: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly - not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great [Chief] Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honour. 2 Cor 13: 10For I want to use the authority the Lord has given me to strengthen you [build you up; for edification], not to tear you down. Acts 20: 28 So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock - his church, purchased with his own blood - over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders [overseers].

3 1. God is the giver of leadership gifts in the church.
Authority is delegated from God who is the ultimate authority. 2. The aim or goal of church leadership is to equip God’s people to do God’s work and to encourage God’s people so they achieve unity of faith in Christ and maturity according to Christ. A leader is called to be faithful not successful. Was Jesus successful?

4 The charismatic/personality leader The servant-hearted leader
Styles of Leadership The dominant leader requires blind obedience The charismatic/personality leader requires loyalty The empowering leader requires relationships The servant-hearted leader requires their own good example

5 “One thing is very clear to me: the temptation of power is greatest when intimacy [closeness] is a threat. Much Christian leadership is exercised by people who do not know how to develop healthy, intimate relationships and have opted for power and control instead. Many Christian empire-builders have been people unable to give and receive love.” (Henri Nouwen - In the Name of Jesus, p60)

6 President George Bush Senior (1989-93):
“Use power to help people. For we are given power not to advance our own purposes nor to make a great show in the world nor a name for ourselves. There is but one just use of power, and it is to serve people.”
