Bipolar World Defined as a post-WWII phenomena where only 2 world powers (I.e. super powers) existed Cold War A ‘war’ of ideology Goal of this war was to obtain political influence over the world Fought using the manipulation of ideas (propaganda), secret operations & through political & economic means Contained the threat of nuclear destruction

Communism vs. Capitalism Who? USA –Harry S. Truman USSR –Joseph Stalin Note: the Cold War lasted a long period of time & underwent some changes in leadership. These individuals are those associated with the first stage of the cold war. What are the respective concerns? USA –communist revolution on a global scale USSR –capitalist revolution on a global scale

Theories & Strategies Used in the Cold War USA Domino Theory – if 1 nation fell to communism, surrounding nations would soon fall to it USA’s proof: Post WW2, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia Containment –a policy held by the US to prevent the spread of communism How? Attempt to win over nations to your ideological ‘camp’ Example 1: “Truman Doctrine” U.S. President Harry S. Truman made the proclamation in an address to the U.S. Congress on March 12, 1947 amid the crisis of the Greek Civil War ( ). The doctrine was specifically aimed at assisting governments resisting communism stated that the US was prepared to send any money, equipment or military force to countries which were threatened by the communist government.
