6 Give a little, take a lot. After several reviews in 1784, 1785, and 1786, the five ‘states’ of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin were created.

7 The Northwest ordinance of 1787
The new states that were to be included were to have equal status as the original 13 states. This legislation also intended to BAN slavery in the entire Northwest Territory.

U.S. agreed to pay $11,250,000 and excuse France in the amount of $3,750,000. In exchange, the United States acquired 828,000 square miles of land.

17 The Louisiana purchase
The treaty was dated April 30 and signed on May 2. In October, the U.S. Senate ratified the purchase. In December 1803 France transferred authority over the region to the United States.
