Student interviews with younger students Show examples of students surveys. Also discuss how you might get information from younger students about their interests and reading habits.

6 Know the Books How do you become familiar with books your students want to read? You should read ALL of these books and keep current with new books. If you are starting from scratch with getting to know the literature at your grade level, you can begin by asking people about the popular books. Try school and public librarians, book lists from professional associations, ask parents, ask the kids.

Select books YOU like to read Consistent time and place for reading aloud Go under the spell of a good book – Read 5-7 times per day – various text – poems, nonfiction, articles, menus, flyers, etc. Understand the purpose of the read aloud – don’t get too involved in trying to teach WHILE you are reading.

Access to Books Time to Read How do we give students access to books? Classroom Libraries – build libraries over time. Scholastic book points are a great way to do this. School/Public Libraries – take advantage of the expertise of librarians and high check-out limits. Mesa libraries have ‘book buckets’ already prepared for teachers around topics.
