Objective: Students will identify which lands were annexed following the war. Students will organize the effects of these lands being annexed. Standards: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now: Why was the U.S. involved in the affairs of Latin America? Define the new vocabulary terms annexation (p.269), Platt Amendment (p.502) Foraker Act (p.503). Work Period: Complete the graphic organizer. SECOND PERIOD Quiz #1: p “Document-Based Questions” #1-4. Close: Draw Conclusions: As a result of the Treaty of Paris, what had the U.S. become?

2 LANDS ANNEXED EFFECTS GUAM CUBA (p.502) PUERTO RICO (p.503)
Under the Treaty of Paris, the U.S. acquired Guam because Spain lost the war. The U.S. was now an imperial power. CUBA (p.502) Cuba became an independent nation because of the Platt Amendment. Cuba remained a protectorate of the US. PUERTO RICO (p.503) In 1900, Congress passed the Foraker Act establishing a government for the island. PR is a commonwealth of the US to this day. PHILIPPINES (p.503) The Filipinos had war with the US. After much fighting, the US allowed the Philippines to govern their own country but kept a few ports.
