Basic Early Literacy Skills
Phonemic Awareness Phonics Accurate and Fluent Reading Vocabulary & Language Skills Phonemic Awareness –sounds in spoken words – need to be able to hear the sounds before can read them Phonics – sounds of written letters Fluent Reading – reading smoothly and accurately with appropriate phrasing and expression, not just fast Comprehension – understanding written text Vocabulary and Language Skills- ?????????? Comprehension

mCLASS Literacy Progress Report
teachers can generate Home Connect Letters for each student after the benchmarking period. These letters provide parents with information about their student’s progress as well as some recommendations for things they can do to work with their child at home. The letters are available in both English and Spanish.

Phoneme Segmentation Fluency -PSF
Measures: the ability to break spoken words into individual sounds “Tell me the sounds in frog.” f-r-o-g should be mastered (score of 40) by end of kindergarten Very helpful with writing

Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)
Measures: letter sounds sound blending Helps with reading longer words- apricot habitat expand Pakistan “Read these make believe words to me.” nup jim rav fus bek wap con gol hif Should be mastered by end of 1st grade Should be saying continuous sounds rather than individual letter sounds

Measures: sight words phonics and word attack skills accuracy rate comprehension End of Year Goals Words Correct Per Minute 1st – 47 WCPM 2nd – 87 WCPM 3rd – 100 WCPM 4th – 115 WCPM 5th – 130 WCPM Want students to move beyond looking at individual letter sounds Eyes should be taking in word parts, whole words, sight words and phrases Rate of reading indicates how automatic students are at decoding Want automaticity in decoding so can pay attention to meaning

Text Reading Comprehension (TRC)
Measures: sight words phonics and word attack skills accuracy and rate comprehension oral and written read and answer questions independently (F & higher) Measures the ability to apply skills and strategies Equivalent to the EOG in upper grades Students will be invited to summer school based on their TRC level

Get your mouth ready. Say the sounds. Lista la boca. Dice los sonidos. Look at the picture. Mira a los dibujos. Think what would make sense. Piensa, es verdad? Check the letters. Las letras? Listen to your voice. Escucha a tu voz.

4 Ts – Get Ready to Read 1. Title – Read the title.
Título: leer el título. 2. Topic – What is the topic of the title? Tema: ¿Cuál es el tema del título? 3. Three – Tell yourself 3 things about the topic. Los Tres – dígase 3 cosas sobre el tema. 4. Take a book walk – Tell yourself more about the topic. Dar un paseo de libro – dígase más sobre el tema.
