Convenience Often products have lots of details about their specifications to make choosing the right product easier. Products are often pictured out of the box, which may be impossible in many physical stores with products in boxes, and not on display. Can easily see what you’re buying. Variety of choice Sellers can be local or international – thousands of sellers, rather than just a handful within driving distance A global range of product options are available, not just what the corner shop happens to stock Specialised, rare and exotic products are available that cannot be found locally VCE IT slideshows © Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Reducing costs Price comparison shopping is cheaper and easier online than travelling between several physical shops or telephoning for information. Some sites offer ‘free’ shipping and still cost less than retail. Auction sites can produce bargain buys. Sellers don’t have to pay for showrooms and their parking spaces, air conditioning, shop fittings, cleaners, and sales staff, so prices are lower. And shoplifting is harder online, so they reduce their losses and your costs. VCE IT slideshows © Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Reducing costs Products coming straight from the manufacturer removes the profit of retailing middlemen, so consumers save money. Marketplace competition keeps sellers’ prices down. It’s harder for them to overcharge when someone else on the other side of the planet decides to charge less. No GST (at the moment!) if buying from overseas. VCE IT slideshows © Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Research The market research was conducted in September 2012 by Stancombe Research on behalf of NSW Fair Trading. It consisted of two online surveys of: 1,000 NSW consumers, and 200 NSW small to medium businesses. Some of the key findings of this research are: The three most important reasons driving consumers to shop online are lower prices, convenience and availability of a wider choice of goods. The main reasons for small to medium businesses selling online include reaching a larger number of consumers and providing greater convenience for the shopper. 74% of consumers shop online entirely or mostly from Australian businesses. 32% of consumers and 40% of small to medium businesses say they don’t know who is responsible for goods that are lost or damaged in transit. 48% of small to medium businesses do not use a secure webpage for payments or collecting personal details. 24% of consumers use a mobile device such as a smart phone or tablet to shop online.
