2
List some renewable energy resources
Hydroelectric Wind Solar Tidal Wave Geothermal Biomass
3
Hydroelectric video Using moving water to drive turbines Advantages
No emissions Cheap to run Disadvantages Limited locations Environmental impact of dams
4
Wind animation Using wind to drive turbines Advantages No emissions
Cheap to run Disadvantages Low power output Only work when it is windy
5
Solar Converting sunlight to electricity video Advantages No emissions
Cheap to run Disadvantages Expensive to produce Low power output Inefficient

Biofuels Biofuels are made from living or recently living organisms
Examples: methane from animal waste, rapeseed oil, ethanol from sugar cane, woodchip Biofuels are renewable as long as the source is replaced at the same rate it is used Biofuels release carbon dioxide when burned. They are carbon neutral because the amount of carbon taken into the organism when it living should equal the amount of carbon given out when it is burned animation

Exam Question An island with a small population currently generates electricity for it’s residents using an oil-fired power station which needs to be replaced. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of replacing the power station with renewable options on the island
8
Model Answer Advantages of using renewable resources
Small population does not require high power output Avoid high building costs Avoid difficulty/expense of transporting fuel to the island Avoid difficulty managing waste Less/no atmospheric pollution Reasons why renewables may be appropriate: Windy Surrounded by water - possibility of using wave/tidal Wind/wave/tidal/hydroelectric/solar would not need fuel Disadvantages of using renewables: Continuous supply of electricity needed so one (weather dependant) renewable would not be enough Lots of the coastline may be taken up installing wave/tidal/wind Visual pollution
