3 Addend A number added to one or more other numbers to form a sum. Algebraic Expressions An algebraic expression is made up of three things: numbers, variables and operation signs such as + and -. Examples 2a, a + b and ab. Coefficient A number before the variable that expresses how many of each variable there are. For Ex: 3x The coefficient is 3 therefore there are 3 x's or 3 times x Constant A value that does not change Difference The answer to a subtraction problem Equivalent Expressions Expressions having the same value. Expression A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables. Factor A number that is multiplied by another number to get a product. Integer A number expressible in the form a or -a for some whole number a. Like terms In algebra, like terms are more than one term or terms that have the same variables and powers. The coefficients do not matter.

4 Numerical Expression An expression that consists only of numbers and operation symbols such as Product The answer to a multiplication problem Quantity A specified or indefinite amount Quotient The answer to a division problem Sum The answer to an addition problem Term A term is either a single number or variable, or the product of several numbers or variables, separated from another term by a + or − sign in an overall expression. For example, in x + 5wyz 3, 4x, and 5wyz are all terms. Unlike Terms Unlike terms are two or more terms that are not like terms, i.e. they do not have the same variables or powers. Variable A letter or symbol that represents a number

5 vocabulary Variable Constant Term Coefficient Like terms Expression

6 4X Variable What is a variable?
It is just a symbol, usually a letter, that can represent different values.

7 Constant y2-y+10 A number on its own
3x2+4x+8 y2-y+10 A number on its own A fixed value and does not contain a variable It does not change

8 Term 9 4x 3xy3 M 2 x2 y 7P A number, a variable, or the product or quotient of a number and one or more variables raised to powers

9 coefficient 8y X 150P A number placed before and multiplied with a variable in an algebraic term

10 LIKE TERMS 132X X 5XY XY2 4P P Terms with exactly the same variable or variables raised to exactly the same powers are called like terms.

11 Expression A mathematical phrase containing numbers, operations, and/or variables 5x2+3y-7
