Classification : Division: Spermatophyta-seed bearing plants Sub division : Angiospermae-seeds inside seedcoat Class : Dicotyledoneae-two cotyledons pr.,tetra or pentamerous symm, flowers hypogynous Sub class:Gamopetalae- petals united, stamens epipetalous Series :Bicarpellatae-Ovary bicarpellary, syncarpous superior Order :Gentianales Family : Asclepiadaceae

Habit :Perennial herbs or shrubs ,often climbing, milky latex present,sometimes succulent, cactus-like. Leaves : Opposite ,decussate ,simple ,entire , exstipulate . Inflorescence : Cymose or racemose ,umbel. Flower : Regular, bisexual gynandrous either petals or stamens or both may bear appendages forming single or double corona. Sepals : 5.united ,deeply lobed, imbricate or quincuncial. Petals: 5,corolla, gamopetalous, rotate; campanulate, valvate or twisted. coralline corona sometimes present of 5 or more scales.

Androecium: Stamens 5, united so as to form a fleshy, hollow column and with a outgrowth at the black forming stamina corona ,enclosing the style , anther adnate to pentangular stigma ,pollen united into waxy pollinia ,which are formed by half anthers, and are united by stalks called caudicles to gland called corpusculum or retinaculum,whole gynostegium is covered by thin membrane.

Carpels : 2, free , united only by their styles and free below,styles 2 united at the apex to form a 5-angled , pentangular stigma. Ovules many, anatropous, pendulous on ventral placentas. Fruit : A pair of follicles ,widely divergent .

Economic Importance : 1.Calotropis gigantia (Rui)
