Missouri Compromise of 1820: 1. Missouri would enter as a slave state 2. No slavery north of the parallel

Mexican War War with Mexico: Gave America new territories in the west (Arizona, New Mexico, California, etc.)

California California: Increased in population during the gold rush. (1849) California wanted – To be a free state (No Slaves) This would – Upset the balance of power in the Senate

- California would be a free state - Mexican cession would determine slavery based on popular sovereignty - Texas gave up land in New Mexico in return for their debts being paid - No slave trade in D.C. - New fugitive slave law

Fugitive Slave Act Stated –
It was a federal crime to aid a runaway slave Fugitive slaves couldn’t – Testify on their own behalf Judges who ruled in favor of owner – Got $10 ($280) Judges who ruled in favor of fugitive - Got $5 ($140) Punishment for aiding slaves = 6 months in jail and $1,000 fine
