3 Accessibility Supports: New Additions for 2016–17
Non embedded designated support: Simplified test directions Non embedded accommodation: 100s Number Table starting in grade 4 Two new accessibility supports have been added to the list of available designated supports and accommodations: The Simplified test directions, a non embedded designated support, and the 100s number table, which is a non embedded accommodation The non embedded 100s Number Table can be found on the CAASPP Web site, where the multiplication table is also posted. The 100s table and multiplication table are available for students with a documented need starting in grade 4. California Department of Education

4 Integrating New Supports into CAASPP System
Revised student setting user interface in Test Operations Management System (TOMS) Applicable tests shown for each accessibility resource Individual Student Assessment Accessibility Profile (ISAAP) Tool Reorganized Unlisted Resources online request form for easier completion Enhancements related to the assignment of the accessibility resources for students have been added: The student settings interface will now include tests for which each of the designated supports and accommodations are available. The ISAAP Tool has been updated to align with system and policy changes related to accessibility. Therefore, please do NOT use ISAAP files from previous years. The Unlisted Resources online request form has been reorganized for easier completion. California Department of Education

5 Changes to the Unlisted Resources Online Request Form
New response options and comment boxes will allow CDE to ask for specific information about the requested support CDE responses will indicate if the support is already available on Matrix One We’ve revised the response options to unlisted resource requests to allow for a smooth approval process. Our review indicated past responses sent to LEAs did not accurately capture certain situations. For example, many requests were for supports already available on Matrix One These changes will allow CDE staff to give more precise responses and adds the ability to communicate with LEA staff within the form to make the process more efficient. California Department of Education

6 Accessibility Resources
CDE Student Accessibility Supports Web page: Updated 2016–17 Matrix One Hyperlinked to short demo videos of the embedded Universal Tools, Designated Supports, and Accommodations Student Accessibility Graphic Smarter Balanced Resources New We are currently developing short videos on how to access the embedded supports for the CAASPP assessments. The Matrix One list of embedded resources will be hyperlinked to the demonstration videos once they are available. In place of the old pyramid graphic, we have developed a new graphic that lists embedded and non embedded universal tools, designated supports and accommodations by each test and content area. California Department of Education

7 Accessibility Resources (cont.)
CAASPP.org Web portal Accessibility Web page: Training videos Student Test Settings Using the ISSAP Tool Universal tools, Designated supports, Accommodations short demo videos Manuals and Quick Start Guides The CAASPP.org Web site will continue to provide information and access to resources related to CAASPP accessibility and technical information. California Department of Education

8 Test Delivery Enhancements: Expandable Items
Allows students to expand the test question just like the feature to expand a passage Slide note: This is an animated slide. The expandable item feature is another new addition. It’s the reverse of the expandable passages feature. In a two column layout, it allows a student to expand the items side of the screen to 90% for less scrolling and easier reading. California Department of Education

9 Test Delivery Enhancements: Video Playback Controls
Added common video playback functionality such as scrubber, mute/unmute, and full screen All common video playback functionality such as a scrubber, mute/unmute, and full screen expansion has been added to the video playback. This feature will also work with the American Sign Language (ASL) accommodation. California Department of Education

10 Test Delivery Enhancements: Enhanced Contrast
Change the contrast on the menu button so that it is more visible to low vision students Normal Contrast Enhanced Contrast The contrast on the menu button has been changed so that it is more visible to low vision students. California Department of Education

11 Test Delivery Enhancements: Larger Zoom Levels
Adding 5X, 10X, 15X, and 20X zoom In addition to the old zoom levels, we are adding 5X, 10X, 15X and 20X This should resolve the need for 3rd party screen magnification software because the Test Delivery System will wrap text from line to line instead of requiring the student to hover their mouse over what they want to read. California Department of Education

12 Test Delivery Enhancements: Item Badges
Status indicators for items: Items marked for review Item has been printed Item has notes Status indicators for items have been improved to include whether an item was marked for review, the student created notes associated with it, and whether the item has been printed or embossed. This feature will also be accessible for JAWS users. NOTE: Slide Animated click to display Zoomed in view of Badge (ICON) used for Marking Item for Review. Second Click to Show Printed and Notes badges and zoomed in view. California Department of Education

13 CA NGSS Assessment Implementation Timeline
Year California Science Test (CAST) Available Testing Window California Alternate Assessment for Science 2016–17 Pilot test March 20, 2017 to the LEA’s last day of instruction 2017–18 Field test TBD 2018–19 Operational test *Second Tuesday in January to the LEA’s last day of instruction 2019–20 California Department of Education

14 2017 CAST Pilot Test Components
Items Student survey Accessibility supports Teacher survey The pilot test will consist of 4 major components: Items Student survey Accessibility supports Teacher survey California Department of Education

15 California Department of Education
CAST Pilot Test Purpose Each form will have discrete items and a performance task. Student survey: - One survey per student - Approximately three to five questions - No more than seven minutes to complete The pilot will take approximately one hour to complete. The CAST pilot administration will serve as a signal of transition from the old science standards to the NGSS. With this pilot test, we will be primarily focused on testing the performance of the newly developed items and item types. Depending on the test form, the pilot test will have anywhere from items and a performance task. Each form also includes a Student Survey at the end of the test questions. All students will take the survey, which has 3-5 questions that should take no more than 5-7 minutes to complete. The pilot test should take about an hour from start to finish. California Department of Education

16 California Department of Education
2017 Full Census Pilot Test All students enrolled in grades five and eight High school sample: All high schools Each high school assigned a single grade All students enrolled in that grade at that school This year’s pilot test is a full census pilot and will consist of All students enrolled in grades 5 and 8 and A pre-selected grade in each high school All high schools in CA will participate. Each high school will be assigned only a single grade. The high school sample will be comprised of about 67% in grade 10 and the remaining 33% will be equally divided between grades 11 and 12. All students enrolled in the assigned grade in the school will participate. The assigned grade will be the same for the CAST pilot test as well as the California Alternate Assessment for Science pilot test. This is important information for you to communicate district wide, especially with the high schools. California Department of Education

17 Accessibility Supports
The purpose is to evaluate the functionality of the specific accessibility features. Student eligibility will be determined by the accommodations identified as required in the student’s individualized education program and/or Section Plan. Some students with specific support needs will get routed to a special test form. Student eligibility is Determined by the accommodations identified as required in the student’s IEP and/or Section 504 Plan. The purpose of this special test form is to evaluate the functionality of the selected accessibility features. The form will have about 10 discrete items. California Department of Education

Teacher Survey Collect feedback on the pilot test administration One survey per science teacher Approximately 10–12 questions No more than 15 minutes to complete We are also developing a teacher survey to collect teachers’ feedback on their experience with the pilot administration. While the survey is optional, learning about their experience will help guide the development and administration of the CAST. This is where we will need your support. In the spring, we will send all LEA CAASPP coordinators a letter that includes a survey link. You will then need to send the information to each teacher who has students participating in the pilot test. Approx. 10–12 questions, designed to be completed in no more than 15 minutes.
