Brief Multiple Stimulus Without Replacement Preference Assessment: Brief MSWO Christina R. Weldy St. Cloud State University

2 About the Brief MSWO assessment
Developed by Carr et al. (2000) Based off of the MSWO by DeLeon and Iwata (1996) Selection-based assessment Data recorded based on the order of item selection Approximately 5 minutes to administer Useful for identifying edible reinforcers The Brief Multiple stimulus without replacement or the MSWO for short was developed by James Carr et al. in 2000 and is an adaption of the full MSWO developed by DeLeon and Iwata in 1996). Research has shown that the brief MSWO is a reliable and valid method for assessing the item preferences of the individuals we serve. And may be the most useful for identifying edible reinforcers. The brief MSWO is a selection-based assessment in which the therapist presents an array of stimuli to the client and instructs the client to choose each item one at a time. Without replacement means that once the client selects an item, that item will no longer be a choice and he or she must choose from the items that remain in the array. The brief MSWO consists of 3 separate presentation sessions of the items you are assessing. That is once the client has selected each of the items in the array, you will assess the same items two more times in the same fashion. This assessment takes approximately 5 minutes to administer. The following slides include video clips and instructions for each step you will be asked to perform when conducting the brief MSWO. After you view each step, you will watch a complete example of a therapist conducting a brief MSWO.
