Main Idea Infants are born equipped to experience the world.
As infants grow physically, they also develop cognitive skills, perceptions, and language.

Newborns At birth, can see, hear, smell, and respond to the environment. Newborns are capable of certain, “automatic” responses called REFLEXES. Grasping Reflex – a response to a touch on the palm Rooting Reflex – if touched anywhere around the mouth, the new born will move his/her head toward the source of the touch (mainly used for nursing).

Physical Development Infants weigh 7.3 lbs on average at birth.
95% weigh between 5.5 and 10 pounds and are between inches long.

Maturation The internally programmed growth of a child.
Most infants can walk by 12 months, but it can range from 9-18 months. Most infants can talk by 2 ½ These things occur naturally and cannot be coached.

Language Language and thought are closely connected.
By the time children are two, they have a vocabulary of 500-1,500 words. At 2, children use telegraphic speech. “where my apple?” “Daddy fall down.” Words are left out, but the meaning is clear.
