Fauvism 1904-1908 First avant-garde movement of the 20th c.
Introduced at a 1905 exhibit. The simplified canvas’ with shocking colors provoked a critic to call the artists “fauves” (wild beasts). Influenced by Post-impressionists, fauvism took the use of color to a new level Used color without reference to actual appearance Looking for new ways to express their emotional response to a scene
