Replay: An application for creating, editing, and replaying inked diagrams
Cem Cattikas Alexander Jovanovic Peter Lincoln Marie Tessier Nick Walker
2
Overview Foundations, the need for Replay
Concept and high level design Creating, editing, and playing back diagrams Replay’s compartmentalized design Key challenges of designing Replay’s features
3
The Problem With Ink Why use ink to simulate processes through diagrams? A solution looking for a problem? Is saving a diagram all that great?
4
Foundations Harnessing the power of ink and correcting the weakness of static diagrams We can save ink diagrams, but why can’t we fix them? We can see ink diagrams, but why can’t we watch them? The addition of animation to ink makes it a much more valuable standalone datatype because it could be stored in a simple format that could “plug in” to all sorts of stuff Imagine taking notes by hand that move
5
Concept Robustly support all aspects of diagram creation, editing and playback A “stand-in” for someone drawing the diagram to teach you Enables the playback of inked diagrams and “in time” editing
6
Diagram Creation Capture ink relative to time with “natural keyframes”
Let user choose breakpoints for premade process simulation creation Import standard ink diagrams and apply user-chosen timing and keyframes Can be used by an instructor lecturing in front of a classroom or by someone simply creating an animated process diagram to be viewed later
7
Diagram Editing Timeline editing: move through the creation of your diagram as it was created Edit, erase or replace strokes “as they happened” from the final diagram or “in time” with timeline editing Other handy features: drying ink, layer locking, captions, onion skinning
8
Diagram Playback Step through the diagram keyframe by keyframe
View captions or hear lecture audio to increase understanding through enhanced context Export to efficient and web-friendly formats: Flash, PowerPoint
9
A Showcase of Features Replay will be a standalone application
A demonstration of features designed to enhance a common use of Tablet PCs Integration into other Tablet PC applications: Classroom Presenter, Journal-like note taking applications We will be creating tools that could be integrated into other applications: the replay ink type, maybe some standard methods and stuff that work together Could draw quick little process simulations for yourself if you are taking notes Tpc is a solution looking for a problem
10
Key Challenges Creating the core Visual Studio control from the ground up based on existing inkable objects User interface considerations, especially timing and methods for editing ink Creating a finished set of features that is powerful enough to justify actual use
11
Conclusion Replay is a suite of features designed to make ink diagrams more powerful Recording timing information for ink will allow playback and “in time” editing Used by instructors and students or in other meeting environments to enhance lectures and simulate processes
