2 Harvard was the first college founded in the American colonies. It was officially founded in 1636 by a man name John Harvard. The Great and General Court of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England approved the establishment of what is now called Harvard. Literacy rates in the Massachusetts bay colony was very high. They required schooling in towns with 50 + families. 3 One reason why Harvard was built in the first place was because they wanted to teach Puritan Ministers. After Harvard was built John Adams attended and graduated from the university, later to become the president. This helped to symbolize Harvard in being one of the most prestigious colleges around. Later on when the Declaration of Independence was signed, eight graduates from Harvard university. After Harvard was built, Yale was really the second big college in New England. Ever since Harvard and Yale have been built, Most presidents or people with some sort of power have passed through there doors.
