PD-1 and PD-L1 positivity in TCs and ICs (IHC; Abcam, Cambridge, UK) was defined as expression of ≥1%. If sTILs were absent, PD-1 and PD-L1 expression on ICs was classified as absent. PD-L1 mRNA positivity was defined as gene expression of ≥ −ΔCt; the cutoff was estimated using engineered cell lines from Horizon Discovery (Cambridge, UK) with different levels of PD-L1 gene and protein expression. Statistical analyses were performed using JMP13.2 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA) and GraphPad Prism 7 (San Diego, CA, USA). A nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical comparisons of continuous variables, with p<0.05 considered significant.
