Had to pass physical exam Anyone with contagious disease was sent home Only 2-3% were sent home

Angel Island This was the equivalent of Ellis Island on the West coast. This is where Asians were processed.

Chinese came to work on the railroads & to prospect for gold Faced discrimination and persecution In 1882 Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act

Gentleman’s Agreement 1907
Japanese government complained that Japanese students were segregated in San Francisco schools. Agreement worked out that schools would be desegregated if Japanese did not allow as many emigrants out of Japan

Immigrants were from eastern & southern Europe & considered “less desirable” Nativists groups arose Immigration restrictions were created which included Chinese Exclusion Act Immigration Quota Acts 1921 & 1924
