Repeated Addition A specified number of items is repeatedly arranged (grouped) a given number of times. One factor describes the number of items in each group; the other factor describes the number of groups.

Example of Repeated Addition
There are six crayons in a box. How many crayons are there in three boxes? + 8

Rate A value or distance is associated with a unit. The product is the total value or distance associated with all the units

Rate Example Jeremy walks three miles an hour. How many miles does he walk in six hours? 1 2 3 4 5 6

Scalar (Comparison) Some quantity (a specified size or number of items) occurs a given number of times (the scalar multiple). The product is a multiple of the original quantity. MSP 4-6 Grant, Module 4-6, Session 2, Handout 2

Example of Scalar Marcus has six marbles. His brother has three times as many marbles. How many marbles does Marcus’s brother have?

Combination Two disjoint sets exist and the size of each set is known. Each of the objects in one set is paired with each of the objects in the other set.

Combination Example Kelly’s Diner offers three main courses and six side dishes. The Bargain Dinner is made up of one main dish and one side dish. How many different Bargain Dinners can Kelly make? M1 M2 M3 S3 S1 S2 S6 S4 S5

Area A rectangular region is defined in terms of units along its length and width. The product is the number of square units in the region

Area Example My garden is three feet wide and six feet long. What is the area of my garden? 6 feet 3 feet
