Skills: Story Structure – The characters, setting, and plot make up the story structure. Theme – The theme is the message or big idea of a story. Monitor/Clarify – When you monitor you note any story details that are unclear. Reread or read ahead to help you clarify, or understand, what happens. Context Clues – If you don’t know the meaning of a word, you can look at the word’s context for clues to its meaning. Adjectives and Articles – An adjective describes a noun. A, an, and the are a kind of adjective called articles. Each drop of water is wasted.) carton – a paper or cardboard box (A carton, or light cardboard container, can be recycled after use.) complicated – hard to understand or deal with; difficult (One complicated, or difficult, part of recycling can be sorting plastic. pollution – the state of being dirty or not pure (Noise pollution, or too many loud sounds, can be bad for our hearing.) rubbish – trash (The more rubbish, or trash, people make the more room it takes up.) hardly – not very much (Some light bulbs use a lot of energy. This bulb uses hardly any energy.) shade – an area where direct sunlight is blocked (The shade from this tree keeps the house cool in the summer.) global – worldwide (Air pollution is a global problem. It affects people all over the world.)
