Project 5, Fluid Flow Separation Control
Progress Presentation: Week 4 Michael Cline Junior Mechanical Engineering Brandon Mullen Sophomore Aerospace Engineering Project Mentor: Kirti Ghia Sponsored By The National Science Foundation Grant ID No.: DUE … … in cooperation with University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, Cincinnati, Ohio.
2
Project Introduction What is flow separation? How is flow controlled?
What are the benefits of eliminating separation? ADD CONTROL
3
Project Goals Project Objectives
A working knowledge of separation flow control strategies. Generate unique data to expand knowledge of flow separation. Provide insight to engineering problems with the application of these control strategies and obtain enhanced performance. Project Objectives Review for unique applications/aspects to investigate. Successfully simulate and prevent airflow separation. Produce summary for Dr. Ghia’s future researchers. Publish technical paper in AIAA or Turbomachinery journal.

Momentum Cylinders Velocity of cylinder injects momentum into separated flow Causes fluid to reattach and prevents negative pressure drag Works best for “bluff” bodies *Effect of momentum injection on the aerodynamics of several bluff bodies By: V.J. Modi, B.Ying, T.Yokomizo
7
Delta-Fins Cause turbulent vortex flows downstream.
Turbulent flow is more likely to reattach. Reattachment decreases separated bubble Decreased pressure drag ensues.

Decreased Separated Bubble by use of Delta-Fins

Progress Project Deliverables Reviewed and compared strategies.
Finalizing implementation solutions. Ready to begin simulation setup. Deliverables Kept up with weekly deliverables. Will begin frame of final deliverables shortly. Lack of data and fully-organized review/comparison has prevented starting.
