1 GRAPHING CALCULATOR Part 2
AM4.1b USING THE TI-83 OR TI-84 GRAPHING CALCULATOR Part 2 (The only difference is the memory available) 1

2 Fill in as many of the key commands as you can.
Home screen Graphing y = To graph 2nd Functions* Cursor Alphabet** Inverse Exponent Square Operations Number keys ENTER *Accesses blue items **Accesses green items 2

3 1. Fractions: (Put numerators & denominators in parentheses.)
(17 + 8) / (2 – 66) ______________________ = _________ Parentheses interrupt the normal Order of Operations. (21 – 99) / ( ) 4.5882… ______________________ = _________ Did you remember to use the (-) instead of subtraction?

4 2. Mixed Numbers: (The “/” sign can be used for fractions & division.)
7 + 3/4 ______________________ = _________ 7.75 (11 + 3/8) / (3 + 2/5) 3.3455… ______________________ = _________ 3. Multiplication: (Can be denoted by parentheses, star or dot.) 2 * 8.3 ______________________ = _________ 16.6

5 4. Exponents: (Denoted by the “^” sign & x2 on the left.)
5 ^ 6 ______________________ = _________ 15625 8 ^ ( 2 * 3) ______________________ = _________ 262144 Did you remember to put the quantity in parentheses? 5. Roots: (Can be denoted by a radical or exponent.) 17 ^ (1/3) 2.5712… ______________________ = _________ Put root in first *Try each one* 5

6 _____________ = _______ 11
6. Absolute Value: Distance from zero (Press MATH, then choose NUM & #1.) abs (-11) _____________ = _______ 11 abs (11 + 3/8 – 15) 3. 625 _____________________ = _______ 6

7 7. Greatest Integer: The greatest integer less than or equal to a number (Press MATH, then choose NUM & #5.) int (4.9) _____________ = _______ 4 int (-3.2) _____________________ = _______ -4 Why -4 and not -3? 7

8 What’s special about this answer?
8. Graph and trace: (First, put your calculator in 6:ZStandard and use “Y1 = ” at the top of the calculator.) (You can only trace to the limits of your window values.) Y1 = 2x2 – 8 = _______ -6 _______________ Y1 = 3x2 – 27 _______________ = _______ What’s special about this answer? 8

9 Active Learning Assignment:
On your handout, Fill in the first columns of blanks as to how you would type it into the calculator. Use a * for mult., / for div., ^ for powers, etc. Find the answer in the second blank. If you have to finish at home, you should have a calculator (any scientific calculator) to find the answers (4 dec. pl.) You will hand it in next time I see you and it will be for a grade.
