My introduction Experience: I have been teaching math and science online for 13 years (since 1999). Schools: Cochise College in Arizona, Kaplan University (nationwide) Wilmington University Georgia Military College starting in December. Instructional design experience

In this presentation, we will talk about:
Sites that are out there that you might not know about: 1. Kahn Academy 2. Live Binders Screen-cast-o-matic I did see that you all had a presentation on this recently, but I will give a brief overview. Be organized! I will share my grade sheets. This will apply especially to online instructors.

Khan Academy is basically a site for homeschooling but it has all kinds of resources for our students as well. There are (at the time I am creating this) 195, lessons online in over twelve languages. There are more than 3400 videos on the topics: mathematics, science, computer science, finance and economics, humanities, and test preparation. Most are geared toward our more remedial classes but I think that everyone can find some valuable resources here.

This site can be used as a classroom if a teacher creates an account and a classroom.
This would be like using MyMathLab or something similar. Most of us would not want to do this. What we would find helpful is to direct students to the videos.

On the main page, scroll down and you will see all of the videos divided into disciplines and topics

This would be what a student would see if you just sent her to the general Kahn site. But you can copy and past the URL for that video into a link for her. That would take her directly to that video.

You could put all of the resources directly into you course links but there is another option! Live Binders

What are live binders? Think of live binders as an online bookshelf. Each shelf holds notebooks with something in common: a course, a particular instructor, or anything that the notebooks have in common.

Inside each binder are resources that a student can access. Think of these as dividers in a 3-ring binder. For example for unit 1 here are the topics: Number Theory Prime numbers Types of numbers Signed numbers Properties of real numbers Exponents

Let’s create a new shelf

Enter a name and description for the shelf and choose whether you want to make it public or private. An access key is required for private shelves. Click on “Create shelf”

To add materials, create topics under “Tabs”

Name the topic and then click on the drop-down menu and select “New Subtab” to allow access to a specific resource.

and then copy and paste the URL of the site into the box and click on “insert”

You can also upload resources like videos, powerpoints, and MS Word documents to your binders. I am going to show how to do this.

To add a file from you hard drive, click on “edit”,

Creating videos Screencast-O-matic is an online program that allows conversion of videos to mp4 files (that can be downloaded on any device!) It is free if your videos are less than 15 minutes or you can pay $15 for a membership and make longer ones. Also, a nonweb-based version is available for download. You can download it to your harddrive to use off-internet.

Keeping organized! If you teach a hybrid or online course where much of you grading is done at a site like MyMathLab, it is helpful to have a method of keeping track of grades. I have grade sheets for each of the classes that I teach.
At the top, I leave an area for the name, nickname, course, and section. Below that, I have an area for adding personal information about the student. For example: Major Location Family stuff Anything else that might be relevant
