Experience: I have been teaching math and science online for 13 years (since 1999).
Schools: Cochise College in Arizona, Kaplan University (nationwide) Wilmington University Georgia Military College starting in December.

I did see that you all had a presentation on this recently, but I will give a brief overview.
Be organized! I will share my grade sheets. This will apply especially to online instructors.

5. Khan Academy is basically a site for homeschooling but it has all kinds of resources for our students as well.
There are (at the time I am creating this) 195, lessons online in over twelve languages.
There are more than 3400 videos on the topics: mathematics, science, computer science, finance and economics, humanities, and test preparation.
Most are geared toward our more remedial classes but I think that everyone can find some valuable resources here.

7. This site can be used as a classroom if a teacher creates an account and a classroom.
This would be like using MyMathLab or something similar. Most of us would not want to do this. What we would find helpful is to direct students to the videos.

8. On the main page, scroll down and you will see all of the videos divided into disciplines and topics

10. This would be what a student would see if you just sent her to the general Kahn site. But you can copy and past the URL for that video into a link for her. That would take her directly to that video.

11. Let’s click on “understanding exponents” Here is what students would see:
The student would just click on the play button to watch a short video on this topic.

12. You could put all of the resources directly into you course links but there is another option! Live Binders

13. What are live binders?
Think of live binders as an online bookshelf. Each shelf holds notebooks with something in common: a course, a particular instructor, or anything that the notebooks have in common.

Inside each binder are resources that a student can access. Think of these as dividers in a 3-ring binder. For example for unit 1 here are the topics:

21. Let’s create a new shelf

22. Enter a name and description for the shelf and choose whether you want to make it public or private. An access key is required for private shelves. Click on “Create shelf”

23. The next step is to create a binder that will be on that shelf

26. To add materials, create topics under “Tabs”

27. Name the topic and then click on the drop-down menu and select “New Subtab” to allow access to a specific resource.

and then copy and paste the URL

click on “insert”

30. The student is directed to the site and just clicks on the play button to view the video.

31. You can also upload resources like videos, powerpoints, and MS Word documents to your binders. I am going to show how to do this.

33. To add a file from you hard drive, click on “edit”,

34. Now click on “edit menu”

35. This screen will come up.

36. At the bottom, click on “upload file”.

37. Now browse for the file.

38. I am going to add the powerpoint “Adding signed numbers”

39. The easiest way to do this is to “upload to new subtab.

40. The file is there and I just need to change the name of the subtab

42. One more thing. If you go back to the main page and click on “Featured binders” there are thousands of binders available

43. Creating videos
Screencast-O-matic is an online program that allows conversion of videos to mp4 files (that can be downloaded on any device!) It is free if your videos are less than 15 minutes or you can pay $15 for a membership and make longer ones. Also, a nonweb-based version is available for download. You can download it to your harddrive to use off-internet.

45. Let’s record a video that I created for another school and place it in a live Binder. Drag the frame.

47. Click on the start button and then on done when the video is completed.

49. To save as an MP4 file.

51. Choose a location on your hard drive and a name for the file.

52. This may take a while but when complete you will see this and you are done!

54. Keeping organized!
If you teach a hybrid or online course where much of you grading is done at a site like MyMathLab, it is helpful to have a method of keeping track of grades.
Also, remembering things about each student is difficult in an online setting.

55. I have grade sheets for each of the classes that I teach.
At the top, I leave an area for the name, nickname, course, and section.
Below that, I have an area for adding personal information about the student. For example:
Major
Location
Family stuff
Anything else that might be relevant
