Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphing
2
What is the relationship between the graph of y = x2 – 6x + 8 and the solutions to x2 – 6x + 8 = 0?
3
Solving Equations When we talk about solving these equations, we want to find the value of x when y = 0. These values, where the graph crosses the x-axis, are called the x-intercepts. These values are also referred to as solutions, zeros, or roots.
4
Identifying Solutions
Example y = x2 - 4 Roots are -2 and 2.
5
Identifying Solutions
Now you try this problem. y = 2x - x2 Roots are 0 and 2.
6
Quadratic Solutions The number of real solutions is at most two.
No solutions One real solution Two real solutions
7
What do you know about the discriminant in each of the previous examples?
