Ancient Greece’s Geography
Consisted mainly of a mountainous peninsula going out into the Mediterranean Sea Included 2,000 islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas Region’s geography directly shaped Greek traditions and customs 2

Greece’s Land Uneven terrain made land transportation difficult
Rugged mountains covered ¾ of Ancient Greece Mountains divided the land into smaller regions Influenced political life Greeks developed smaller independent communities Uneven terrain made land transportation difficult Took travelers days to complete journeys Only small part of land suitable for farming. 3

The Sea Greeks didn’t live on land, but around the sea
Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and Black Sea were important transportation routes Seaways linked most parts of Greece Sea travel and trade important because Greece lacked resources Ex: Timber, metals, farmland 4
