2 The End of The War Yalta Conference- Met before WWII was over to decide World direction Potsdam Conference-Met at end of War to finalize duties US realized it could no Longer be Isolationist USSR Saw opportunities to take more control in Europe Cold War- The indirect World conflict between US/USSR that lasted 46 years-No direct shots fired

3 Different Ideologies Countries were driven by very Different Political Ideologies - Opposite USSR-United Soviet Socialist Republic -Communist ideal-public ownership/property -Government makes all key decisions for all -No freedoms/Rights for the Individual -One Political Party System US-United States-Capitalistic Democracy -Free Elections Allowed of Officials -Various Freedoms are Recognized & Given -Individual is Valued and Cherished -Numerous Political Parties

4 Germany-The First Real Conflict of the Cold War
USSR wanted a weak and divided Germany to guard against it ever rising to power again and to punish the Germans Wanted Control of all Eastern Europe as a “buffer zone” for his country against future attacks. U.S. wanted a stronger Unified Germany- realized the mistake of WWI & Treaty of Versailles Wanted the Eastern Countries to Gain Independence- break away from Soviet control and be free Nations eventually USSR/Stalin agrees to what the US wants Does exact opposite back in USSR US/Truman isn’t fooled-knows Soviets are intent on Expanding

5 Truman Doctrine Replaced Roosevelt in 1945
Ended the War-Had to deal with Post War Negotiations Potsdam Conference-Had a different view of Stalin than Roosevelt -didn’t trust USSR Realized that Churchill’s “IRON CURTAIN” description is real- USSR already trying to influence Asia & Middle East Truman Doctrine 1947 -Realizes He will have to fight USSR in a different way -Starts with Economic Policy-$ to Greece/Turkey who are struggling to be free -Marshal Plan-Next Step to curb USSR influence with money. Stopped Soviet expansionism because struggling countries became economically stronger The Cold War Begins
