LED - light-emitting diode (a semiconductor diode which glows when a voltage is applied). On the HDD, it indicate when the storage device is being used. If the hard drive activity light is continuously lit, especially when the computer isn't otherwise responsive, it's often times a sign that the computer or device is locked up or frozen.
