2 SEFMD Want to deeply engage your students in all aspects of STEM? How about giving your students an edge when it comes to 21st Century Skills- then get your students involved in the SEFMD!

3 About SEFMD The SEFMD is one of the Oldest and Largest Science Fairs in the Country Students from across SE Michigan compete each March at COBO Hall There are Jr. Division (MS) and Senior Division (HS) competitions Each year approx participants The SEFMD is the feeder event for State, National and International Fairs at the Jr. and Sr. levels

4 LMS Sci. Fair Club 2018 This year I will mentor12 individual projects and 4 team projects (2-3 students). Students select their own topic/project and create original research on it to present. All participating students will compete in the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit (SEFMD), March 14th at COBO Hall. Finalists (Grand, 1st & 2nd) qualify for the national science fair, Broadcom Masters. No time no problem… most meetings are during lunch! Join our Schoology Group using the access code: X9GW-SDHK9

5 Individual vs. Team Individual Projects- I will mentor 12 of these. Projects are judged on their research display boards. Students are not present for the judging process Team Projects consist of 2-3 students. I will mentor 4 of these (hard cap per school) These projects are judged via interviews from 8am to 12pm on the day of judging. Not all members have to be present for judging. However, they are all STRONGLY encouraged to be present for judging.

Pick something you are interested in! Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (Interdisciplinary) This is the most critical in terms of success Be creative, look at new and original research for inspiration Investigate issues in the news Solve/Find Problems Build something Real World

9 Club Structure We will have one general meeting per week during lunch
I will also be available to meet during lunch individually/team to help with projects as needed Home support- It is expected that parents will support student work on projects at home (when possible). Parents are also responsible for purchasing all materials related to the students project.* *Cost of display boards will be covered using the club fee

10 Expectations Attendance at all club meetings is mandatory!!!
If absent on the day of a meeting see me ASAP to get any information missed Strong organizational skills and time management are critical for success Students must communicate with me and follow through with suggestions Self direct/independent work is expected Materials must be ordered ASAP no later than mid-December

12 Club Fee You must pay the general extracurricular activity through payschools There is also a $25 club fee which covers affiliation and the cost of display boards The club fee is due upon acceptance of the project and payable in cash Possible transportation cost if a bus is needed to take students for project setup (I prefer carpooling)

If there are more than 12 individual project and 4 team projects interested than I will use the proposals and short interviews to decide which projects to accept I will post details for proposals next week to our group Proposals will outline: topic, general background and feasibility (exp. design) Proposals are Due Nov. 16th

15 Detroit Public Library, Environmental Management Association, and The Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit Present Science Fair Success: Your Best Project The EMA has partnered with SEFMD to provide mentoring to students by top Michigan experts within the scientific fields.  Members of the operating Council, along with science fair judges, teachers and past science fair participants will discuss how to execute ideas, develop science fair projects, and how to showcase them for judging.  Please join us at the Detroit Public Library, Friends Auditorium: Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI  48202: Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Lunch Provided); (program starts at exactly 10:00 AM) The program is FREE but space is limited.
