1 Tpes of Connective Tissues & Muscle Tissues

2 Types of Connective Tissue
1) Loose connective tissue: -few fibers & fibroblasts -lots of matrix -holds organs in place 2) Fibrous irregular C. T. -many irregularly placed collagen fibers -skin 3) Fibrous regular C. T. -rows of fibroblasts, bundles of fibers -tendons & ligaments

3 Specialized Connective Tissues
1) Cartilage – fine collagen fibers packed in rubbery matrix called chondrin - no blood vessels 2) Bone – living cells in mineralized matrix 3) Adipose tissue – cells convert carbs to fat - very little matrix, lots of capillaries 4) Blood – Red & white blood cells & platelets - matrix = plasma ( water with dissolved proteins, gases, ions, sugars)

4 Types of Muscle Tissues
1) Skeletal Muscle – works with bone/cartilage -moves body - voluntary muscle 2) Cardiac Muscle – in wall of heart -involuntary muscle 3) Smooth Muscle – walls of internal organs - not striated (no sarcomeres)

5

6 Skeletal Muscle -partners with bone, moves body
- made of bundles of muscle fibers - myofibriles in bundle have rows of contractile units called sarcomeres. - sarcomeres give striped look so called striated muscle - voluntary muscle - 40 % of body mass

7 Cardiac Muscle (myocardium)
a) only in heart wall b) has sarcomeres so striated c) single branching cells not bundles d) adhering junctions join them end to end forming an ‘intercalated disk’ of junctions

8 e) signals to contract go through gap junctions
(signals are action potentials) f) more mitochondria than other muscle g) stores very little glycogen h) Involuntary

9 Smooth Muscle Tissue a) walls of internal organs
b) single un-branching cells c) spindle shaped cells c) not striated…no sarcomeres d) myosin & actin bound to cell membrane e) contract slow, but can be sustained f) peristalsis, sphincters arterioles
