2. To what extent were President Johnson’s actions towards the former Confederate States the Cause of deep divisions?
Key problems:
Not understanding the question
Not knowing any US history
Not remembering how to write an essay
So essentially…. Everything?

3. Problem One: What the question means
Did President being lenient in his treatment of the ex-Confederate States cause the deep divisions that existed ?
With Congress- arguably yes, as they wanted them to be punished and wanted to bring about a Radical Reconstruction with ex-slaves getting land, education, work and the vote and Johnson tried to stop several of these.
Between the North and the South arguably no, as he wanted to forget the old divide and unite the nation, hence pardons, declaring the Union restored, not demanding too much change from the South.
Write a perfect introduction based on these statements

4. Problem two: Not knowing anything
Key Events : Which did you know? Which are Johnson causing tension which are Congress causing tension?
Johnson declares the Union restored before Congress is in session (Dec. 1865)
Johnson’s Pardoning of Confederates (1865, 1867 and 1868)
Johnson and Congress clash over Freedman’s bureau
Civil Rights Act 1866 and 14th Amendment
Republican’s getting 2/3rd majority in congress
South divided into Military districts- Congress applies pressure to get 14th Amendment passed, Black voter registration grows dramatically
Johnson getting impeached (reasons, outcome)
Grant gets elected

5. Problem two: Not knowing anything and Problem three: What is an essay thingy? And what woz I posed to do?
Write a series of paragraphs using books etc. to help based on the events on the previous slide.
Make sure each start with a clear point.
The middle of the essay should have detail and analysis of what that evidence shows. There should be some balance in terms of Johnson’s fault/ Congresses fault.
Every paragraph should end with a mini-judgement linked back to the question
Write a conclusion, it should have a judgement that is consistent with your paragraphs and your introduction.
