Competitive Food:
“Any food item that is sold in competition with the [National School Lunch and School Breakfast} Program[s] to children in food service areas during the lunch [and breakfast] periods” (7 CFR ).
“ In those schools participating in the School Breakfast and/or National School Lunch program(s), competitive food service is any food or beverage service available to students that is separate and apart from the district's nonprofit federally reimbursed food service program, and is operated by school-approved organizations or by school-approved outside vendors” (2202-R   Competitive Food Service).
FMNV: Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value
“In the case of artificially sweetened foods, a food which provides less than five percent of the Reference Daily Intakes (RDI) for each of eight specified nutrients per serving; and
In the case of all other foods, a food which provides less than five percent of the RDI for each of eight specified nutrients per 100 calories and less than five percent of the RDI for each of the eight specified nutrients per serving” (Appendix B of 7 CFR 210).

Exempted FMNV:
Foodservice Area: any area on school premises where program meals are both served and eaten.
