The objective of the IP Project is to cover all ITU activities on IP standardization, with a strong link with IETF Activities are organized in 13 study areas described in the IP Project description document Existing edition is V6, new V7 in preparation based on updates from SGs (to be put on ITU SG13 website on Nov. 8) To SSG attention : Study area 13 "Utilisation of IPv6 in telecommunication networks" introduced in Feb 2002 is being completed in Nov. SG13 meeting

3. NGN 2004 Project SSG – SG13 meeting, Nov 5th 2002
NGN (Next Generation Network) is a concept widely used by network designers to describe future networks which should cope with the emerging situation in telecommunications : - Open competition, total deregulation of markets, - Explosion of data traffic due to the general use of Internet, - User demand for new multimedia services and for mobility... SG13 decided in Feb to start the preparation of a new ITU Project on NGN, with the objective to respond to the demand from the market for standards on a worldwide basis The Project should cover all ITU activities on NGN standardisation, with active collaboration of involved SGs Target date for first set of Recs on NGN is mid-2004 (end of study period)

A preliminary task identified is to establish a common definition of "NGN"
Fundamental characteristics are proposed for defining NGN :
Packet-based transfer
Separation of control functions for bearer - call/session - service application
Decoupling of services and network, provision of open interfaces
Support for a wide range of services (RT/ streaming/ non-RT/ multimedia)
Broadband capabilities with end to end transparency, including access network utilization considerations
Interworking with legacy networks
Generalized mobility

5. NGN 2004 Project SSG – SG13 meeting, Nov 5th 2002
The view of SG13 that the NGN should be seen as the concrete realisation of GII (Global Information Infrastructure) concepts which are defined in Recommendations from the Y series
A Project description document is in preparation during this SG13 meeting, with the goal to launch the Project in Nov. 2002
Six study areas have been identified so far : 1. General framework models for the NGN 2. Functional architecture models for the NGN 3. End to end Quality of Service 4. Service platforms (APIs) 5. Network management 6. Security

However, it is pointed out that the implications of "generalized mobility" on NGN standardization have not been taken into account so far in the description of the NGN 2004 Project, waiting for outcomes of the SG13 - SSG meeting Possibilities are : - introduction of a new study area dedicated to general mobility issues in NGN, - a "dispersion" of mobility issues in study areas already identified - any other ? --> The SSG is invited to collaborate on this.

7. NGN 2004 Project SSG – SG13 meeting, Nov 5th 2002
In their response to SG13 (see TD 28-Gen), the SSG confirms their interest for the NGN Project undertaken by SG13. The SSG informs SG13 :
- that Q.7/SSG is currently working on the principles and requirements for converged networks.
- WP3/SSG has the objective to work in the area that enables global roaming for the user
It is pointed out by the SSG that the global roaming should be achieved irrespective of the access mechanism or the technology, i.e. an IMT-2000 mobile network user should be able to register in a fixed network as roamer
It appears that the NGN 2004 Project should take into account global roaming as part of the NGN
