I am going to start by introducing you to the history of ENA and the work we currently do at ENA.

We have a rich history, but there is still a great amount of work to be done in the emergency nursing practice:
ENA’s goal was originally aimed at teaching & networking.
However, ENA has evolved to be the voice of emergency nursing as well.
ENA now has three primary goals: Education, Networking, Advocacy.
The ENA vision is to be the global emergency nursing resource and advocate for Safe Practice and Safe Care.

5. History of ENA Emergency Dept. Nurses Association “EDNA”
1968, Anita Dorr and Judith Kelleher
Incorporated in 1970
First Scientific Assembly 1971 in New York
4,000 members by 1972
1975, first issue of Journal of Emergency Medicine “JEN”
1985, name changed to Emergency Nurses Association “ENA”
Founded by two amazing individuals; Anita Door and Judith Kelleher, who, on opposite coasts had same vision. They pooled their individual organizations into one in 1970 – the EDNA.
In just 2 years, by 1972, we had already grown to more than 4,000 members!
In 1985 we officially changed our name to Emergency Nurses Association -- the ENA

We continue to grow as the role of emergency nurse has expanded.
Over 95% of our members are registered nurses
80% of members are women and 20% are men
Nearly 60% are 35 or younger

We work to provide quality, evidence-based emergency nursing education to help you deliver safe practice and care.

Members get free on-line learning for CEN credits and evidence-based content in ENA’s publications and training programs.

17. Important Resources
Working with the CDC, HHS, HRSA and the White House, ENA is actively involved in public health and infectious disease concerns that effect the emergency department. ENA works jointly with nursing and other health care related organizations to create and disseminate critical information in expeditiously.
