1 “You Have Heard It Said”
‘‘You Have Heard It Said’’ [continue to next slide] [full outline appears below for copying and printing purposes] ‘‘You Have Heard It Said’’ INTRODUCTION: Jesus said a number of times in Matthew 5, ‘‘Ye have heard that it was said. . . ’’ (Matthew 5:21,27,31,33,38,43) As in Jesus’ day there are a number of things which we have heard said which cannot be found in the Word of God. Let’s take a look at some: JUST LET YOUR CONSCIENCE BE YOUR GUIDE I don’t know of an idea that will get you into more trouble religiously than this. A lot of people think that as long as they are sincere and are doing that which their conscience says is right, God will save them. Conscience: ‘‘The moral sense within oneself that determines whether one considers one’s own conduct right or wrong’’ It is the feeling of pleasure when we do what we think is right, and of pain when we do what we think is wrong. Our conscience is not the standard of right and wrong - the Bible is! Notice Paul: Acts 23:1 Acts 26:9-11 Notice what Paul did in Acts 8-9; yet his conscience did not bother him. If the standard one goes by is not in harmony with the Word of God, then our conscience will urge us to do what is wrong and will keep us from doing right! 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3; Col. 3:17; Rom. 4:3 ONE RELIGION IS JUST AS GOOD AS ANOTHER AS LONG AS ONE IS HONEST AND SINCERE: The concept that one religion is as good as another as long as one is honest and sincere is a false concept and comes from teachings of denominational preachers who teach folks such. The Bible only refers to the religion of Jesus Christ. Notice Eph. 4:1-6 IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE HOW ONE WORSHIPS, JUST AS LONG AS HE WORSHIPS: God has always been specific as to how He wanted man to worship Him. A careful reading of Deuteronomy 16 will show some requirements of God in the worship. Deut. 16:6 Deut. 16:14 Dent. 16:16 Deut. 16:21-22 God did not accept the worship of Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10:1-2). If it makes no difference how one worships, how do you explain the fact that God accepted Abel’s worship but not Cain’s? (Gen. 4:1-4; Heb. 11:4) How could one worship in vain if any worship is acceptable to God? (Matt. 15:9) There would be no such thing as ‘‘will worship’’ (Col. 2:23) if it makes no difference how one worships. John 4:23-24 Matt. 4:8-10 Rev. 22:8-9 ONE CHURCH IS JUST AS GOOD AS ANOTHER: You mean that ‘The Holy Spirit Repair Service Inc.’; ‘The Mormon Church’; The ‘Jim Jones Church’; ‘The Roman Catholic Church’; ‘Satanism’; ‘Unification Church The Moonies By Sun Myung Moon’; ‘Christian Science’; Is as good as The Church Jesus Died To Establish? The Bible refers to only one church (Rom. 16:16). There is one body (Eph. 4:4) and the body is the church (Col. 1:18; 1:24). Mat. 16:18 How many would he build? Psa. 127:1 Why would you want to be a member of a human church when you can be a member of the Lord’s church? WE ARE ALL HEADED FOR THE SAME PLACE; JUST GOING DIFFERENT WAYS: It is true that we are all headed for the same place - the judgment and eternity! If there are so many different ways to heaven, doesn’t it look like the Lord would have said something about it. Rather the Lord said: Matt. 7:13-14 John 14:1-6 John 10:1,9 Matt. 7:21-27 Luke 6:46 Rev. 22:14

2 “You Have Heard It Said”
Matthew 5:21,27,31,33,38,43 ‘‘You Have Heard It Said’’ INTRODUCTION: Jesus said a number of times in Matthew 5, ‘‘Ye have heard that it was said. . . ’’ (Matthew 5:21,27,31,33,38,43) He introduces each new subject with this type of phrase…some things were true, some were distorted. As in Jesus’ day there are a number of things which we have heard said, but these are things which cannot be found in the Word of God. Let’s take a look at some:

3 “Just Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide”
I don’t know of an idea that will get you into more trouble religiously than this. A lot of people think that as long as they are sincere and are doing that which their conscience says is right, God will save them. “I’m OK; You’re OK” mentality. No moral judgment, no condemnation. Do not condemn, criticize, complain. (The biblical “reprove, rebuke, exhort” of 2 Tim. 4.2) Yaser Said’s honor killing of his two daughters, Amena and Sara, in Iving, TX, was according to his “conscience.” What was wrong with it? Conscience: ‘‘The moral sense within oneself that determines whether one considers one’s own conduct right or wrong’’ It is the feeling of pleasure when we do what we think is right, and of pain when we do what we think is wrong. Our conscience is not the standard of right and wrong - the Bible is! Notice Paul: [click]

4 “Just Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide”
Acts 23.1 Acts Paul’s actions in Acts 8-9 Notice Paul: Acts 23:1 Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, "Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.“ Acts 26:9-11 "Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. {10} "This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. Notice what Paul did in Acts 8-9; yet his conscience did not bother him. [click]

5 “Just Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide”
Acts 23.1 Acts Paul’s actions in Acts 8-9 Romans 10.3 Many like the Jews of Paul’s day, are ignorant of God’s righteousness, yet their conscience tells them they will be saved. (Rom 10:3 NKJV) For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. If the standard one goes by is not in harmony with the Word of God, then our conscience will urge us to do what is wrong and will keep us from doing right! 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3; Col. 3:17; Rom. 4:3 “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

6 “One Religion Is As Good As Another As Long As You’re Honest and Sincere”
Ephesians “one body” (the church Eph ) “one faith” (THE faith – Jude 3) ONE RELIGION IS JUST AS GOOD AS ANOTHER AS LONG AS ONE IS HONEST AND SINCERE: The concept that one religion is as good as another as long as one is honest and sincere is a false concept and comes from teachings of denominational preachers who teach folks such. The Bible only refers to the religion of Jesus Christ. Notice Eph. 4:1-6 (Eph 4:1-6 NKJV) I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, {2} with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, {3} endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. {4} There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; {5} one Lord, one faith, one baptism; {6} one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

7 “It doesn’t make any difference how we worship, just as long as we worship”
Deuteronomy 16 Leviticus Why Abel’s and not Cain’s? Gen How can worship be “in vain?” Matthew 15.9 IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE HOW ONE WORSHIPS, JUST AS LONG AS HE WORSHIPS: God has always been specific as to how He wanted man to worship Him. A careful reading of Deuteronomy 16 will show some requirements of God in the worship. Deut. 16:6 “…in the place…” Deut. 16:14 “…rejoice in your feasts…” Dent. 16:16 “…three times a year…” Deut. 16: No trees, pillars or groves near the altar of God [adv] God did not accept the worship of Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10:1-2). If it makes no difference how one worships, how do you explain the fact that God accepted Abel’s worship but not Cain’s? (Gen. 4:1-4; Heb. 11:4) How could one worship in vain if any worship is acceptable to God? (Matt. 15:9)

8 “It doesn’t make any difference how we worship, just as long as we worship”
Deuteronomy 16 Leviticus Why Abel’s and not Cain’s? Gen How can worship be “in vain?” Matthew 15.9 IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE HOW ONE WORSHIPS, JUST AS LONG AS HE WORSHIPS: God has always been specific as to how He wanted man to worship Him. John 4:23-24 “…must worship…in spirit and truth” (Mat 4:8-10 NKJV) Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. {9} And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." {10} Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'“ (Rev 22:8-9 NKJV) Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. {9} Then he said to me, "See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God."

9 “One church is as good as another”
Romans Ephesians 4.4 Colossians 1.18, 24 Matthew Psalm 127.1 ONE CHURCH IS JUST AS GOOD AS ANOTHER: You mean that ‘The Holy Spirit Repair Service Inc.’; ‘The Mormon Church’; The ‘Jim Jones Church’; ‘The Roman Catholic Church’; ‘Unification Church’ The Moonies By Sun Myung Moon’; ‘Christian Science’; Scientology… ‘Church of Satan’; Is as good as The Church Jesus Died To Establish? [click] The Bible refers to only one church (Rom. 16:16). There is one body (Eph. 4:4) and the body is the church (Col. 1:18; 1:24). Mat. 16:18 How many would he build? Psa. 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds…” Why would you want to be a member of a human church when you can be a member of the Lord’s church?

10 “We’re all headed for the same place; just going different ways”
Yes…Judgment and Eternity! How many ways did the Lord mention? Matthew John John 10.1,9 Matthew WE ARE ALL HEADED FOR THE SAME PLACE; JUST GOING DIFFERENT WAYS: [click] It is true that we are all headed for the same place - the judgment and eternity! If there are so many different ways to heaven, doesn’t it look like the Lord would have said something about it. Rather the Lord said: (Mat 7:13-14 NKJV) "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. {14} "Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. John 14:1-6 (Verse 6) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 10:1,9 {1} "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” {9} “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved…” Matt. 7:21-27 “Not everyone who says…” Luke 6:46 “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not do the things I say?” Rev. 22:14 “Blessed are they who do His commandments…”
