1
Chemical Reactions Analyze chemical reactions in terms of quantities, product formation , and energy
2
EQ: How is a balanced chemical equation written and in what ways does it illustrate the Law of Conservation of Mass? Learning Goal: SWBAT – Differentiate between the 5 types of chemical reactions while relating these reactions to the Law of Conservation of Mass by correctly predicting their products and balancing the reactants with the products. Key Terms - chemical reaction, coefficient, chemical equation, subscript, balanced equations, synthesis, atom inventory, combustion, decomposition, single-replacement, endothermic, exothermic, hydrocarbons, double replacement, aqueous

Types of Chemical Reactions
Type of Reaction Description Formula Example Synthesis 2 elements combine to form one product A + B → AB Decomposition 1 compound breaks apart to form 2 or more products AB → A + B Single Replacement 1 element replaces another element in the compound. A + BC → AC + B or A + BC → BA + C Double Replacement 2 compounds react by rearranging positive ions AB + CD → AD + CB Combustion Hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water CxHy + O2 → CO2 + H2O
5
Identify the type of each reaction below
Double Replacement E. Decomposition B. Double Replacement F. Synthesis C. Combustion G. Double Replacement D. Single Replacement H. Single Replacement
6
Balancing Reactions We have to write BALANCED chemical reactions, because of the Law of Conversation of Mass, which states mass can not be created or destroyed. Therefore the number and type of atoms that we started with must be equal to the number and type we end up with.
7
You Try Coefficients Reaction Type A. 2, 1, 1, 2 B. 2, 1, 1
D. 3, 2, 3, 1 A. Double Replacement B. Synthesis C. Combustion D. Single Replacement

Check Your Understanding
Can I differentiate between the 5 types of chemical reactions while relating these reactions to the Law of Conservation of Mass by correctly predicting their products and balancing the reactants with the products? 4 – I can teach it to a classmate 3 – I can perform without help 2 – I can perform with help 1 – I am completely lost, please help me!
