4 The Middle East: Gulf War
1980s: Iraq-Iran War Iraqi President Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait & threatened Saudi Arabia. Bush rallied the UN: Operation Desert Storm After weeks of air and missile bombardment the 100-hour land battle there was a decisive victory and Hussein lost. Kuwait was liberated.

7 Africa: Ethnic Conflicts
Belgium controlled Rwanda & separated Hutus & Tutsis. Tutsi = more European & richer Hutu = more African & poorer Tutsis ruled when they got independence in 1961. : Angry Hutus rose up, set up roadblocks and killed Tutsis. Eventually, Tutsis started to kill Hutus, too. Between 500,00 – 1,000,000 died

8 Asia: India & Pakistan Indus River located in Kashmir
Indus begins in Kashmir, flows through Pakistan and then into India. Kashmir is part of India and they could divert water and dry out Pakistan. Kashmir is 80% Muslim Kashmir has a famous textile industry 3 Wars over it in the 1990s India controls it for now

Balanced budget “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy with homosexuals in the military 1998 Monica Lewinsky scandal Clinton denied involvement, lying under oath Impeachment of Clinton in 1998 after the scandal they acquitted him and he was not forced to leave office.

Rodney King verdict and riots-53 people killed and 2000 injured
