CSII: General Concepts of Therapy
Insulin pumps utilize prandial insulin (typically rapid acting insulin) to cover basal and prandial needs Prandial insulin infused to provide basal insulin coverage (basal rate) Prandial insulin administered in boluses for prandial coverage and for correction doses The pump is programmed with Ins:Carb ratio and Correction Factor Active Insulin Time is programmed into the pump to prevent “insulin stacking” Insulin pumps utilize a single infusion site for the duration of the infusion set (multiple days; varies by product) Insulin pumps often integrate with glucometers and/or continuous glucose sensors (CGMs)
