With the Protestant Reformation taking hold throughout Europe – The Catholic Church needed a change! Pope Paul III would lead Catholics away from corruption.

Council of Trent: Established in 1545 as a series of meetings designed to end Catholic corruptions. Took steps to end abuses in the Church Set up schools to educate clergy members. Trent: Called by Pope Paul III; led by Cardinal Carlo Borromeo

Ignatius of Loyola: Spanish knight founded the Catholic “Society of Jesus”…called Jesuits. Traveled to Protestant lands in secret to minister to Catholics.

By 1600, most of Europe remained Catholic. The Counter-Reformation had succeeded in ending most corruption. However, Protestantism had gained a strong foothold. To this day Europe remains divided by interpretations of Christianity.

Witch Hunts!! Between thousands of Europeans died as a result of witch hunts. Most scholars believe it had to do with people’s dual beliefs in Christianity and magic! Witches worked with aid from the devil and were seen as anti-Christian. Most of the accused were social outcasts.

Witch Hunts!! Most believed there were physical ways to judge whether the person was a witch or not. Unusual, visible birthmarks Certain body parts that were insensitive to a needle prick. Someone around them contracting a disease The weather!
