3 Let’s first look at the causes
Renaissance values Printing press Kings getting more power and the church less. Many viewed Pope as a foreign leader. Princes and Kings wanted a chunk of the Church’s wealth. Merchants did not want to pay taxes to the church. Corrupt church leaders Issues with the sale of indulgences.

4 The perfect storm October 31, 1517 Martin Luther Posts the 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Church door. Speaking out against those he called the “Pardon Merchants”

5 Luther’s Teachings People could win salvation by faith alone. No need for “good works”. Teaching should be based on the Bible. Both pope and church were false authorities. All people with faith are equal. Pope is not closer to God.

6 Consequences Martin’s ideas became threatening to the church so in 1520 Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V a devout Catholic. Summoned Luther to the town of Worms

7 The Edict of Worms Luther refused to stand trial and recant.
This edict declared Luther a heretic No food No shelter All of his books burned

8 Prince Fredrick Fredrick ignored Charles He hid Luther for about
a year. In exchange Luther Translated the new testament into German. Upon returning to Wittenberg Luther found out that his teachings had gained followers, developing into a separate religious group known as Lutherans.

9 100,000 people are about to die

10 Peasants’ Revolt Angry peasants began raiding monasteries, pillaging and burning. Luther was horrified and wrote a pamphlet stating that Princes must do whatever it takes to squash the rebellion. Sooooooooooooo….

11 They crushed the rebellion by killing around 100,000 people
They crushed the rebellion by killing around 100,000 people. Peasants are no longer a fan of Luther and his ideas.

12 Princes on the other hand were fans!
Some genuinely believed in his teachings Some like the idea of not having to pay taxes. Some like the idea of seizing church property.

13 Peace of Augsburg Charles tried to force the German Princes back into the Catholic church. WAR WAR WAR WAR WAR Fighting 1547 Charles defeats them but can’t force them back into Church. Hello the whole point. Tired of fighting they go to Augsburg and decide that each prince may decided on his own which religion his state will follow.
