1 Modeling linear functions

2 Procedure Determine static number:
Static number: Cost/Height/Charge, etc that doesn’t change no matter what. Static number will represent “b” or the y-intercept Determine Variable Number: Variable number increases or decreases with each additional minute, item, month, etc. Variable number will represent “m” or the slope

3 Stan’s position in the building can be expressed by the equation
Example 1 Stan works in the Empire State Building. Stan walks up the stairs at work during his lunchbreak to stay in shape. When he’s finished, he takes the elevator back down to his office Stan’s position in the building can be expressed by the equation f = 3m + 60 Determine what f, m, and 60 represent If Stan is willing to walk for 10 minutes, how high up the building will he reach?

4 Example 2 Kira is planning a big road trip with her friends. She’s trying to choose between two rental car companies for the road trip. Enterprise charges no initial fee and a flat rate of $45 per day Hertz charges a $30 initial fee and a rate of $35 per day Determine an equation for each company’s cost If the equations were graphed, which would have a steeper slope? If Kira is planning a 7 day trip, which company would be cheaper? Bonus: What amount of days would the two companies have an equal cost?
