A Type of government that has one national government that makes the laws for the whole country. There may be local governments, but they only enforce the laws Federal A Type of government that has one national government and multiple governments. BOTH make and enforce laws. How Is Power Divided? National Government National Government Local Gov’t Local Gov’t Local Gov’t Local Gov’t Local Gov’t Local Gov’t Confederation A collection of countries, like a club, that untie together to make laws, decisions and to solve problems. Two types: governmental (Ex: UN) and economic (EU) Iraq US Japan Ex: UN, EU, AU, ECOWAS, OPEC GB Saudi Arabia India If you are in this “club” then you follow the rules and decisions of “the club.”

Do the Citizens Vote? No = Autocracy Yes = Democracy
(Dictator, Theocracy, Monarchy) Yes = Democracy (Republic, sometimes Constitutional Monarchy) Do the Citizens Vote? Sometimes (only if you are part of the group!) = Oligarchy Communism and Military Junta See next few slides to determine how the government determines the participation of their citizens.

A political group that rules the whole country
A political group that rules the whole country. If you are part of the political party, then you vote. Oligarchy Vote Here! If you are not part of the political group, you have no vote and no say in government.

Autocracy Only the one ruler makes the laws and final decisions. They may delegate enforcement, but final say is the leader’s! The common citizen doesn’t have a vote and is rarely consulted!

Parliamentary VS Presidential
Two Types of Democracies Parliamentary VS Presidential Presidential Democracies Citizens vote for representatives in the legislature AND for a leader of the country. Parliamentary Democracies Citizens vote for representatives in the legislature. The representatives in the legislature then vote from among themselves a leader. The citizens vote in BOTH types of democracies.
