FLORIDA The Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819 settled the dispute by drawing clear borders, giving Florida to the U.S. while giving to Spain everything west of Louisiana from Texas to California. The U.S. also agreed to pay $5 million in claims to Spain. General Andrew Jackson is considered a Hero.

TEXAS ANNEXATION The Texan army defeated Mexico at San Jacinto to win its independence in April The LONE STAR REPUBLIC was born. President Sam Houston asked Congress to annex Texas. Northerners feared another southern slave state. Many other Americans feared a war with Mexico. Texas was annexed by the U.S. in 1845 The Rio Grande/Nueces river border dispute led to a war between the U.S. and Mexico

Who is James K. Polk? Democratic candidate James K. Polk promised to expand the borders of the U.S. and complete its Manifest Destiny!!!! Polk wanted Texas, California and the Oregon Territory. Polk campaigned on the slogan “fifty four forty or fight” referring to the border of the Oregon territory. Polk wins the election of 1844 to become the 11th President of the United States.

OREGON TERRITORY Rather than fight Great Britain for Oregon, Polk settled for half of Oregon. Great Britain and the U.S. agreed to divide Oregon at the 49th parallel North latitude (1846). Polk avoided war with Great Britain, but war was looming with Mexico over the annexation of Texas.

MEXICAN WAR The United States army invades and captures New Mexico and California.

Gen. Winfield Scott invaded Mexico City and forced the Mexicans to surrender.

TREATY OF GUADALUPE HIDALGO
The Mexican Cession (1848) gave all of California and New Mexico territory to the U.S., in return Mexico received $15 million

GADSDEN PURCHASE 1853 The Gadsden Purchase was purchased by the U.S. from Mexico in 1853 for $10 million. This area included a strip of land in present day Arizona and New Mexico. The U.S. wanted to build a trans-continental railroad
