Magnetic uniform films on graphene for spintronics applications
Scientific Achievement Demonstrated that it is possible to grow uniform Dysprosium films on graphene. Significance and Impact By deposition at low temperatures and in stepwise fashion uniform magnetic films are grown on graphene. Such uniform films are necessary for spintronic applications of graphene that require flat interfaces. Achieving this type of growth has been the outstanding challenge in the community since graphene was pursued as a technologically important material. Dy Research Details After successive deposition of 2 monolayers of Dy graphene is covered . The effect was confirmed using low energy electron diffraction with both graphene spots reaching zero intensity after the deposition. STM image showing that Dy films wet graphene if grown at 110 K and deposited in stepwise fashion (left). This is confirmed with high resolution Low energy diffraction where the graphene spot intensity becomes zero after 2 monolayers of Dy is deposited at 110K(right). D. McDougall, H. Hattab, M. T.
