Late 1500s: A group who became known as “Puritans” wanted to purify the Anglican church so it would be further away from Catholicism
Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower in 1620

Puritan colonies operated under a THEOCRACY, which is a blending of church and state.
Church was funded by tax money
A governor existed, but the local reverend also held a powerful political position
Church attendance was legally mandated

7. Justification: Puritans were critical and intolerant, due to their ethnocentrism and belief in manifest destiny.
