Civil War & Reconstruction #2 due 10:45 p.m. Warm-up Civil War Notes Objective: TLW identify, explain, and analyze the major events and people of the Civil War Activity: Have students write down their warm up in their journal, discuss. Then introduce the Civil War, using the power points discuss how the Civil War began and students will be taking notes in their journal. Use the Civil War Part 1 power point. Dred Scott v. Sanford Text Significance Ruled slaves were property.
“We think (those persons who are the descendants of Africans who were imported into this country and sold as slaves’) are not, and that they are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word ‘citizens’ in the Constitution…” “The unhappy black race were separated from the white by indelible marks, and laws long before established, and were never thought of or spoken of except as property…” “…it is the opinion of the court that the act of congress which prohibited a citizen from holding and owning property of this kind (slave) in the territory of the United States north of the line therein mentioned is not warranted by the constitution, and is therefore void…” “…the plaintiff (Dred Scott)…could not be a citizen of the State of Missouri within the meaning of the constitution of the United States, and, consequently, was not entitled to sue in its courts.” Ruled slaves were property. Ruled blacks were not U.S. citizens. Ruled slaves could not file lawsuits. Ruled slavery could not be prohibited in territories. Ruled slaves had voting rights

STRATEGIES FOR VICTORY: SOUTH (CONFEDERACY)
The South planned to fight a defensive war—make the North come to them. The South hoped to raise money to fight the war by selling cotton to Europe. This didn’t work because the North blockaded the coast and Europe already had a surplus of cotton.

THE BATTLE OF BULL RUN Located in northern Virginia.
Led by Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, the south won the battle. Battle showed that the war would be LONG and BLOODY, not a three-month war like some thought.

THE CIVIL WAR SOLDIER Most were between 18-30.
Some as young as 11 and as old as 83 served. Most were farmers. Many were illiterate, especially in the south. Many saw this as an adventure until reality set in.

ARMY LIFE Camps were unsanitary.
Soldiers fought lice, fleas, dysentery, measles, yellow fever, etc. Bathing and washing was sporadic. Diet was limited.

ARMY DISCIPLINE Punishment for crimes included wearing signs, balancing weights, late night guard duty, whippings, branding, and execution.

MEDICINE Unsanitary Poorly-trained doctors. No modern medicines.
Amputation was a common solution for a soldier’s wounds. Limited painkillers More died of sickness in the war than being killed in combat.

MILITARY TECHNOLOGY Rifles were improved.
