3 Chapter 3 Tenses and the Present System
Every sentence has a verb. Every verb has a tense. The verb’s tense indicates at what time the action takes place. Latin has six tenses. Chapter 3 will focus on three tenses – the present, future, and imperfect tenses. These three tenses make up what is known as the present system since they all use the present stem. Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation

6 Chapter 3 Tense Marker Time for some more excitement Latin-style! Now, English often indicates tense by adding a helping verb. present: She is singing. imperfect: She was singing. future: She will sing. Latin is much more efficient and exciting. Instead of using clunky extra words, Latin adds a tense marker between the stem and personal endings. Without further delay…..future tense!.... Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation

7 Chapter 3 Future Tense!! stem: cantā tense marker: b/bi/bu + personal endings: -o/m, -s, -t, -mus, -tis, -nt Person Singular Plural 1st Person cantā-b-ō cantā-bi-mus I will sing we will sing 2nd Person cantā-bi-s cantā-bi-tis you will sing you (pl.) all will sing 3rd Person cantā-bi-t cantā-bu-nt he – she – it will sing they sing Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation tense markers for future: singular: b – bi – bi – bi – bi – bu Say it again! b – bi – bi – bi – bi - bu

Person Singular Plural 1st Person cantābō cantābimus I will sing we will sing 2nd Person cantābis cantābitis you will sing you (pl.) all will sing 3rd Person cantābit cantābunt he – she – it will sing they sing Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation Choose another verb from Chapter 3 vocabulary and we will send it back…

9 Chapter 3 Will you ask a question?
Just like with present tense, we can add –ne to the end of the future tense verb to create a question: Cantās you sing Cantāsne? Do you sing? or Are you singing? Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation Cantābis. You will sing. Cantābisne. Will you sing? Nōn Cantābis. You will not sing. Nōn Cantābisne? Will you not sing?

Choose another verb from the Ch. 3 Vocabulary and let’s do the same exercise. you (verb) Do you (verb)? or Are you (verb)-ing? Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation You will (verb). Will you (verb)? You will not (verb). Will you not (verb)?

stem: habitā tense marker: ba + personal endings: -m, -s, -t, -mus, -tis, -nt Person Singular Plural 1st Person habitā-bā-m habitā-bā-mus I was living, I used to live we were living 2nd Person habitā-bā-s habitā-bā-tis you were living, you used to live you (pl.) all were living 3rd Person habitā-bā-t habitā-bā-nt he/she/it was living, began to live they were living Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation tense markers for future: they’re all bā! Say it again! bā – bā – bā – bā – bā - bā

13 Chapter 3 Imperfect Tense!!
Person Singular Plural 1st Person habitābam habitābāmus I was living, I used to live we were living 2nd Person habitābās habitābātis you were living, you used to live you (pl.) all were living 3rd Person habitābat habitābant he/she/it was living, began to live they were living Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation Choose another verb from Chapter 3 vocabulary and we will conjugate in the imperfect tense.

14 Chapter 3 Will you ask a question?

What number is it? Cūius est numeri? It is singular. Singulāriter est. It is plural. Plūrāliter est. What person is it? Cūius est numeri? It is first person. Est prīmae persōnae.
